Repair or Replace? How to Decide When Your Appliance Breaks
Your dishwasher just died. Or your dryer stopped heating. Or your 12-year-old refrigerator is making a noise it never made before. The first thought is always the same: should I fix this thing, or is it time to buy a new one?
It is a fair question, and there is a simple way to think about it. No guessing, no gut feelings, just a few practical checks that will point you in the right direction.
The 50% Rule
Here is the easiest test: if the repair costs more than 50% of what a new appliance would cost, and the unit is already past the halfway point of its expected lifespan, replacement is usually the better move.
For example, say you have a 10-year-old dishwasher and the repair quote is $350. A decent new dishwasher costs around $600 to $800. That $350 repair is more than half the cost of a new one, and the dishwasher is already past its prime. That is a case where replacing probably makes more sense.
But if you have a 3-year-old washer with a $200 repair, and a new washer costs $800, fixing it is the easy call. The repair is small and the machine has years of life left.
Average Appliance Lifespans
Knowing how long your appliance is supposed to last helps you make the call. Here are average lifespans for common household appliances:
- Refrigerator: 10 to 18 years
- Washer: 10 to 14 years
- Dryer: 10 to 13 years
- Dishwasher: 9 to 12 years
- Stove/Range (gas): 15 to 17 years
- Stove/Range (electric): 13 to 15 years
- Oven (wall): 14 to 16 years
- Microwave (over-the-range): 9 to 10 years
- Ice machine: 8 to 10 years
- Wine cooler: 8 to 12 years
These are averages. A well-maintained appliance can last longer. A poorly maintained one might not make it to the low end.
When Repair Almost Always Wins
Some situations make the answer obvious:
- The appliance is less than 5 years old. It has too much life left to throw away over a single repair.
- The repair cost is low. A $100 to $200 fix on any appliance is almost always worth it, unless the unit is already falling apart.
- It is a premium brand. A Sub-Zero, Viking, or Thermador appliance costs thousands to replace. Repairs on these units make sense much longer than on a basic model.
- It is a built-in unit. Replacing a built-in dishwasher, microwave, or ice machine often means dealing with cabinetry, plumbing, or electrical modifications. Repair is simpler and cheaper.
When Replacement Makes More Sense
On the other side:
- The appliance has already been repaired multiple times. If the same unit keeps breaking, it is telling you something.
- The repair is more than half the cost of new, and the unit is old. That is the 50% rule in action.
- Parts are discontinued. Older appliances sometimes need parts that are no longer made. If the part is hard to find, the cost goes up and the reliability goes down.
- Energy costs are high. A new refrigerator or washer can use 30% to 50% less energy than a model from 15 years ago. If your utility bills are high, a new unit might pay for itself over time.
Do Not Let Emotion Drive the Decision
People get attached to their appliances, especially a stove they have cooked on for 20 years or a refrigerator that has "always worked fine." That attachment is understandable, but it can lead to expensive repairs on a machine that is going to break again in six months.
On the other side, some people want to replace everything the moment it hiccups. That is wasteful too. A single repair can give an appliance 5 or more good years.
